What can you do in Edinburgh at Christmas?

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

If you’re visiting Edinburgh this Christmas, there are plenty of things to do and you’ll want to take advantage of everything that the city has to offer. Whether you’re on family travel or on a romantic vacation with your significant other, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, whether you’re a history buff or someone looking for adventure, here at dads travel we will enlighten you. So what are the best things to do in Edinburgh at Christmas?

Visit the Christmas Markets

The Christmas Markets have something for everyone, from sweet treats for the children, to food for the whole family. I recommend trying some Haggis! I tried loaded fries with Haggis and peppercorn sauce, they were delightful! There are plenty of stalls with gifts and decorations as well, so you can make your house feel like a winter wonderland. There are plenty of dazzling Christmas lights to look at and Edinburgh Castle is lit up with colourful lights every night until Christmas. Take a break from the cold and go ice skating. It's just as magical as it sounds!

Visit the Edinburgh Zoo

The Edinburgh Zoo is a great place for a family outing, with plenty of opportunities for children to interact with animals. After visiting the Giraffe house, where the giraffes come right up to you, it was hard not to feel more excited about life. There's also the Penguin Parade, which could be found just by following the sound of squawking penguins; when we got there we were greeted by a parade of penguins moving from one side of their enclosure to the other. It was amazing! You might even get lucky and see an animal being fed. We visited the Edinburgh zoo last year on our trip to Scotland and can't recommend it enough!

Visit Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is situated atop a hill on the north-east side of the city. The area around it was a Roman settlement, then became a medieval town and, eventually, an important military base. The castle has played host to many famous people including Mary Queen of Scots. It's one of the most popular attractions in Scotland, especially during December when it hosts its own Christmas market with all the trimmings.

Attend Hogmanay for New Year!

Hogmanay is the Scottish word for New Year, and it's celebrated right across Scotland. Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations include a torchlight procession through the Old Town, live music and entertainment, fireworks, displays of public artworks, and food & drink.

The celebrations start on December 31st with a spectacular fireworks display over the Castle.

A trip to Edinburgh at Christmas time is the perfect family holiday and is something that is bound to get you into the Christmas spirit!
